An Eary Tale! [Jun. 30th, 2009|04:11 pm]

I just ate some artichokes. Funny story, that.

(Actually, more than one. My supermarket has promo signs over the artichokes which read "Tear off the leaves and ear the fleshy end". They've had the same signs up for a couple of years now, each season. If they tried to ear the thorned end, they'd fix the damn signs quickly enough!)

When I went shopping Sunday I'd bought half-a-dozen artichokes. As I have a bad habit of leaving them in the fridge for a week or two, I prepared and boiled them immediately. They were draining in a colander in the sink when we fled the building. When we went back in to pack for our refugee flight, I actually put them in a plastic bag and grabbed a fresh jar of Russian dressing to take along. Somehow, with all that was in jeopardy, I couldn't turn my back on $5 worth of vegetables.

In the event, I'd left them in the water too long (having gotten distracted by Meet The Robinsons), and they were a trifle over-done, but I still saved them from the disaster.

Several people have commented on how calmly I'm taking this. I thought about it this afternoon. We're doing what we can do, which isn't much. I can be depressed and anxious and dramatic, or I can Spock it out. Spocking has stood me in good stead many times in the past, and I think it's a good choice here. Keep my head, check for developments, and Don't Panic.

Spocking it out, after an initial period of utter panic, is how I usually respond to actual catastrophes. It's funny - you can tell how important something actually is by how much flailing I do. If I'm flailing around like an epileptic squid, it's probably nothing of any long-term consequence/import. If I'm very calmly and rationally navigating the situation, it's probably pretty important.

Me too, actually. In an actual emergency, I'm pretty dependable. If I've spilled my tea, expect drama and wailing. (I once -- I've told this story -- accidentally boiled the skin on my leg. I was perfectly calm, running to the bathroom and hosing it with cold water, until the skin began to peel off in long strips. Then I invoked my mother.)

Sounds about right. The absolute calm in the aftermath of the Knee Incident is what tipped me to the fact that it was time to go to the ER, and not just walk it off (of course, the inability TO walk might've had something to do with that, too)

Yeah, I can do that too. Do you find you have one hell of a reaction later, once you start getting the "the danger is past now" feeling? Cuz oh man, that's what I have to watch out for.

Ditto! Once the dust settles then I have a total meltdown. (I wished I watched Star Trek to provide an appropriate non-Spock example)

Counterexample!

How about Arne Darvin, the Secret Klingon who sabotaged the quadrotriticale, when confronted with a contemptuous tribble?

I panic in inverse proportion to the seriousness of the situation. Luckily I still have the "Don't Panic" button your sister gave me.

'ear 'ear!
(Oh, God. I'm so lame.)

Spocking is what I generally do, too. TEH DRAMA takes too much energy.

BTW, if I get hurt and I start laughing take that as a sign I am really hurt. I'm not sure why the hell I laugh in the face of Painful and/or Potentially Mortal Peril, but there it is.

Or I become quiet and excessively polite. This is bad because the nurses assume I am OK and that what I am asking for requires no urgency on their part. I need to work on this.
