After watching the Jackson Hobbit fragment, I of course started the book again. (They've just gone through the cargo hatch on their way out.) I finally realized that the dwarve's song, that first night, is an exposition dump. In fact, one of the reasons they sing it is to brief Bilbo on the Story So Far, and communicate the emotional load of this journey as well.
