So the Republicans are going to shut the government down at midnight in order to demonstrate their ideological purity – or, more precisely, to compete in a mad scramble as to who is the greatest ideological warrior. The left wing of the GOP now rests at John McCain, a man whose bravery is unquestioned but whose sense might be a trifle more wispy, who is nonetheless suggesting that perhaps they ought to do a trifle of, you know, governing. John Boner, the Speaker-To-Animals, has announced that the Democrat's refusal to give them everything they want regardless of damage to the country or even sanity is "overweening arrogance". In short, I don't think that Terry Gilliam would have considered going this far.
As usual, I'm wondering what, exactly, is going on in these people's brains. Well, I understand that the need for drama is outweighing the negligible call of responsibility, and I realize that what's running them is a desire for attention and to feel important and powerful – and that the best way to feel important and powerful is to make someone else suffer – and I realize that we're also looking at a stunning display of ignorance and delusional thinking. Beyond that, though, I don't understand why the Affordable Care Act – and any other legislation that might help people – infuriates the teabaggers so. Is it simply that the Republicans have defined their purpose solely as ensuring that Barak Obama does not accomplish any of his goals? Is it that they cannot stand to see a black President under any circumstances? Is it that they're so locked into a Zero-Sum mindset that they cannot stand anyone but their billionaire masters to have anything whatsoever? (For that matter, is it that their billionaire masters simply want everything, everywhere, forever?) (We Covet the Earth!)
Some political writers have pointed out that the end result of the current trend in governing might well be Paris, 1793. Bit by bit, the Right seems to be trying to convince us that that would be an excellent idea, and that we need to start sharpening the guillotine blades now, and that we will need them soon.
My senators are Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul so if you wouldn't mind rolling that guillotine down here first....
Which reminds me I Just saw Rand Paul described as a "mysteriously credentialed Chia Pet from moonshine country".
Someone recently wondered aloud if Ron Paul had any children other then Rand and Ru.

What's the Truth
"Is it simply that the Republicans have defined their purpose solely as ensuring that Barak Obama does not accomplish any of his goals? "
Well yes in fact that's precisely it Professor .
I guess you forgot when Mr. Obama was elected President and one of the gop losers stood up in The Senate and announced just that .
Maybe you thought they weren't that stupid/mean/foolish ? .
Charlie Pierce (a local journalist) pointed out that the government isn't broken as a result of the Teabagger's intransigence -- breaking the government is their actual goal. They don't have to negotiate shit -- they're in gravy, and are happily circle-jerking in their own little world.
You should have heard the conversation at my end of the table! See my latest post. :)
