He had spent the entire night setting up this circle; drawing the glyphs and the signs, laying out the intricate maze and the wards around it; laying out the powders and the candles and the braziers and the fetishes and the tools. Dawn was approaching. He was tired, but training kept his attention sharp. He had had to keep his focus under far worse; he was, after all, still alive and uneaten.|
He looked over all of his work and his careful drawing and arranging. Finally he murmured a little cantrip and powered it with a gesture.
There was a pale glow where the circle was still unclosed; he would close it after he had entered it. And, in the far corner, another pale glimmer was blinking.
He carefully picked his way over and peered at the indicated pattern, and felt a cold shock. He hadn’t fully crossed the arms of the msh’tch’agha. He had left himself open to possession if the entity was smart enough and tricky enough to reach around…which it most certainly would be.
He shuddered delicately, erased the errant sigh, and redrew it most carefully.
“Thank all the absent gods”, he thought, “for Spell-check.”
