In The Hollow Of The Night, When You Are Cold And Numb [Nov. 10th, 2016|05:02 pm]

10 November 2016

I hung up on one of my oldest friends yesterday. We've known each other for fifty years. I've always been able to ignore his execrable politics (he listens to Lush Rimjob on his iPod), but now I can't. He called me up and I of course said that I was devastated. In the ensuing conversation, he said that a major reason he voted for The Apricot Homunculus was that Obama and Secretary Clinton had deliberately given Iran nuclear weapons. Since they actually prevented them from working on a weapon, I became incoherent with rage and hung up. I should call and apologize, and suggest we not talk about politics and let history decide. (Such as when he looses his health insurance, and he looses his disability, and when the anti-Sematism he denied comes to the surface...) but I don't think I can do so yet.

My Unitarian church is holding meditation and a service tonight for people mourning for our country. I myself am practicing my nee mantra.

Not my President.
Not my President.
Not my President.

First Parish Brewster did something like this last night. I didn't attend - choir rehearsal was healing enough for me. Our choir has over 25 people now. Unlike most church choirs, we actually have four basses and four tenors, six of whom are men. (One of the basses and one of the tenors are trans women.) One of the pieces we worked on was Karl Jenkins "Adiemus," better known to you as a Delta Airlines commercial.

On January 20, he will be our President. In the words of our former governor Deval Patrick,

"Trump was not my candidate, but he is my president-elect,” Patrick wrote in an email to the Globe. “As odious as his rhetoric and some of his campaigning was, as destructive as it was to blame the vulnerable for what ails us as a nation, he also spoke to the anxieties and yearning and even the anger of Americans who feel left out and left back. Because I care about people who suffer and their lived experience, I will keep trying to work past the hate, but I cannot and will not excuse it.”

“Because I thought it was irresponsible and unpatriotic of Republican leadership to declare themselves opposed to anything and everything Obama proposed even before he was sworn in, I will not repeat that transgression,” Patrick wrote. “I will pray for the President’s success and the success of the country, and I will stay awake and vigilant for the hate this campaign unleashed. I hope that example will be meaningful to other private citizens and maybe to some of our political leaders, too.”
